The diminutive Tasman Parakeet (recognised by IUCN as Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae cookii) is Near Threatened/Appendix I in the wild, with a mere 50-100 mature individuals. Clearance of forests before 1950 for timber, agriculture and pasture and the degradation of foliage has severely reduced suitable habitat and nest-sites for these parrots.
