A Guide to Australian Turtles in Captivity - Book Review

Saturday, November 10, 2012

Australian Freshwater Turtles are quite unique when you compare them to other turtles throughout the world and their husbandry is equally so.  For decades the available husbandry guides were specifically aimed at North American or European species of turtles and tortoises which have very different husbandry requirements to ours.  For too long people needing accurate information on the keeping and breeding of Australia’s freshwater turtles had to rely on incomplete or out-dated references or trial and error, often to the detriment of the turtle.  Finally, we have a comprehensive guide to the specific care of Australian species and it has been a long time coming. Read More...

A Guide to Australian Snakes in Captivity, Elapids and Colubrids - Book Review

Saturday, November 10, 2012

In recent years, there have been a number of publications on the care and husbandry of Australian reptiles. With few exceptions, these have focused primarily on pythons and lizards, with very little attention paid to other Australian snake families. Until now, husbandry and breeding information on the elapid and colubrid snake families had to be sought from discussions among herpers, isolated articles in journals or magazines or carefully, and often unreliably, deduced from various online forums. However, a newly published book in a series released by Reptile Publications has aimed to close this knowledge gap.  Read More...

A Guide to Australian Skinks in Captivity - Book Review

Friday, November 02, 2012

Most serious reptile hobbyists in Australia would have been aware of Danny Brown’s project to publish a major work on reptile captive husbandry for many years. When such plans appear to continue interminably it usually means the assignment will never be fulfilled or, more rarely, the fruition is a work of exceptional standard. In this instance the latter is most definitely the case. This is a phenomenal piece of work that amply reflects the level of time and effort invested in its production and one Danny Brown can be extremely proud of.  Read More...

A Guide to Australian Frogs in Captivity - Book Review

Friday, October 26, 2012

Australian herpetoculture trails the USA and Europe in many aspects but particularly in amphibian husbandry and breeding where progress has been slow and intermittent. It was with great anticipation that I received a copy of this new publication and there is no doubt it is streets ahead of anything produced locally before. The book is divided into three main sections beginning with general aspects of husbandry, such as housing, feeding and breeding, followed by a section on health and diseases and finally the second half of the book covers specific species accounts. The photography throughout the book is of a high standard and I am especially pleased to see useful photographs of cage types, furnishings and equipment, which are often omitted in place of extra species pictures. Scott’s species photographs are a beautiful bonus in the book and the addition of habitat shots will assist keepers in assessing the captive requirements of the species concerned. I was disappointed that the photograph captions in the husbandry sections did not include scientific names.  Read More...
